"This is the site about NATO bombing in Yugoslavia, as seen from Belgrade by me, my family and my friends. This site is here to tell as much truth as I know. This site is here to show the public what's going on and how it feels. This site is here because I am afraid.
You are now with me, under the gun."
Exerpt from 5/22 "In the shelter, one meets many interesting people, many interesting stories. People tend to open their hearts and souls in a way that would never happen in the more normal times. There are happy people, sad people, grouches. One of my shelter friends always complains about things, nothing is ever good; and he blames it all on his advanced age. He's not old at all, but my age - only 78!"Exerpt from 5/10 "We watched the funeral of those young Chinese people killed. I was moved and surprised by the incredible grief the survivors showed, sobbing uncontrollably even though they were public figures, in plain sight. I guess that some things are so terrible that they strip us of all roles, until we are only terrified humans. Many, many Belgrade citizens showed up to offer support and condolences. They might have felt especially bad for these innocent people that are not even a part of our tragedy, that were brave enough to stay with us when so many others, including many humanitarian relief workers, had left.
Another story I am very upset about is the accusations about the mistreatment of the poor American soldiers that seems to be lauded ever since the Chinese Embassy bombing. I wish they'd find a different spin to cover their rampage. Yugoslavs are people proud of their hospitality, and these lies are especially offensive. Why no one asks why the change of story? A week after they were released, in Germany, the soldiers were interviewed and stated that they were treated very nicely and with respect. Now, a week after they are back in the clutches of their army, all of the sudden, their superiors are saying that they were tortured. They must believe that the American public is especially stupid. I just can't believe that they are.

![]() | CounterPunch is the bi-weekly muckraking newsletter edited by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair. Twice a month we bring our readers the stories that the corporate press never prints. We aren't side-line journalists here at CounterPunch. Ours is muckraking with a radical attitude and nothing makes us happier than when CounterPunch readers write in to say how useful they've found our newsletter in their battles against the war machine, big business and the rapers of nature. We're in our sixth year now and have exceptionally loyal readers, who have delighted in our irreverent and biting approach. Time and again they tell us they're sick of dull, predictable writing. They want fresh facts, a newsletter that they can enjoy rather than just endure--and we give it to them. Barbara Ehrenreich says, "CounterPunch makes me think. It makes me laugh. Above all it tells me things I didn't know." Here at CounterPunch we have many friends and all the right enemies. And, guaranteed, you'll never see any of us on the pundit line up at MSNBC. We try to stay beyond the pale. |
